During the opening period, customers who bought drinks in-store could take part in a giveaway of limited-edition camping cups, drawing a large number of consumers to visit and check in. However, the huge turnout also exposed a lack of operational experience, with frequent problems such as the online mini-program crashing, stores being overwhelmed with orders, and one-hour queues. In addition to regular coffee, the Decathlon coffee corner has also launched sports-themed special drinks that match the brand's tone, with prices following an affordable approach. Whether this kind of crossover play can be sustained is worth watching. [more…]

Xtep's cross-industry coffee debut store lands in Chengdu—why is the signboard not "Te Coffee" but COSINE KASHU?
Another case of a sports brand entering the coffee arena. Following Li-Ning's launch of Ning Coffee, Xtep, which has over 6,251 offline stores, has also filed trademark applications for "T Coffee" and "XTEP COFFEE." Recently, Xtep's first coffee shop opened within its flagship store in the Chunxi Road commercial district of Chengdu. Surprisingly, the store sign does not display "T Coffee" but instead shows "COSINE COFFEE." It turns out this is a collaborative store created by Xtep and COSINE, a trendy beverage brand founded in Shanghai in 2021. Rather than opting for a self-operated model, Xtep chose collaboration to reduce the risks of cross-industry expansion and test the waters. Whether this store is an attempt by Xtep to develop a side business or merely a supporting facility to enhance the in-store consumer experience, the company has not yet given a clear response. After eight years of operation, the Starbucks Reserve store at Wuhan Tiandi has closed, the original site will welcome a sports brand, and a mobile coffee truck will take over operations.
Recently, construction hoarding has gone up at the former site of the Starbucks Reserve store in the Wuhan Tiandi Xintiandi district, as the sportswear brand lululemon is set to move in. This Reserve store, which opened in 2016, was once Starbucks' third store in China to offer nitro cold brew and featured the country's first Barista Craft Room creative space, and was officially defined as "the most Wuhan Starbucks Reserve store." Over eight years, it became a landmark in the district and a top choice for relaxation in consumers' hearts thanks to its unique environment and art wall. Now its quiet departure has prompted many netizens to express regret. As for the reason for the closure, outsiders speculate that it is related to too many nearby stores or rising rent. Starbucks is currently maintaining operations in the Xintiandi inner street with a mobile coffee cart, and whether it will reopen in a new location remains to be seen. [more…]

Guming's Wu Yanzu co-branded packaging bag sparks controversy: Consumers complain the design looks like health supplement packaging, brand responds feedback has been noted
After collaborating with actor Daniel Wu to promote coffee products in late June, Guming Tea recently rolled out packaging bags featuring his image at stores nationwide, which unexpectedly sparked widespread dissatisfaction among consumers. Many customers complained on social media that the bag design was "not aesthetically pleasing" and that the celebrity's portrait was too large, saying carrying it felt like "health supplements for middle-aged and elderly people" or "soaking goji berries," and some even said they wanted to throw it away as soon as they received it. Some netizens argued that although Daniel Wu has high national recognition, he is no longer young and does not fit the positioning of a youthful tea beverage brand; others pointed out that the brand should consider scenarios for secondary use of the packaging. On September 23, Guming staff responded that they had not received related complaints, but would record opinions on the design and spokesperson and pass them on for evaluation. The incident reflects the tension between co-branded packaging and the aesthetics of young consumers. [more…]

Harbin Pharmaceutical Factory No.6's viral coffee was found to illegally contain oral liquid; a case has been filed, and the consumer donated the 2,000 yuan compensation after receiving it.
In May of this year, a tourist discovered two specialty drinks at a coffee shop in the Harbin Pharmaceutical Group No. 6 Factory scenic area — Blue Bottle Latte and Zinc Wish Latte — which had been supplemented with calcium gluconate and zinc gluconate oral solutions, respectively. Since these two oral solutions are Class A non-prescription drugs, adding them directly to food products is suspected of violating the Food Safety Law. After a consumer reported the matter to 12315, the local market supervision bureau opened a case on May 14. The consumer subsequently received multiple phone calls from the bureau and eventually signed documents in August confirming receipt of compensation and a reward totaling 2,000 yuan, which was donated to the Hebei Red Cross. The incident sparked heated discussion online, with some questioning whether the consumer was making a mountain out of a molehill, while others insisted that food safety is no small matter. [more…]
